Design technology for Superconducting Device
Investigation Committee on Design technology for Superconducting Device
Keyword : design, superconducting device, case study
Recently, in Japan and abroad, most of the research and development on the application of superconductors, which deals with themes ranging from the fabrication process to new applications, is conducted in the form of national projects that involve collaborative research among private companies, universities and national laboratories. In order to realize the practical applications of superconductors, their economic feasibility must be considered. Furthermore, concept designs, trail productions and experiments suggest that high-temperature superconductors will also be realized. The electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical properties of HTSs differ from those of low-temperature superconductors (LTSs). Therefore, the design techniques for HTS applications must be established taking into consideration the knowledge and experience obtained from LTS applications. Because of the above considerations, this technical report was written with the aim of proposing guidelines for designing HTS applications using Bi-system and Y-system conductors. Chapter 2 describes the current status and material properties of HTS wires, thin films and thick films. Chapter 3 describes the electromagnetic, thermal, mechanical and insulating properties of these wires and films as well as the measurement techniques that are necessary for designing HTS applications. Chapter 4 presents case studies of the design of HTS applications such as SMES coils, cable transformers and NMR magnets. Chapter 5 describes the current status of the applications of superconductors, including that of the applications of LTSs.
