Matrix converters, which are typical examples of direct dc-dc converters, do not have energy storage components in intermediate stage and have fewer number of power devices in the current path of the main circuit. Thus, they are expected to realize smaller size, higher reliability and higher efficiency. Although the matrix converters had been put into practical use due to these benefits, further spread of their applications has not been realized so far. This technical report discusses obstacles to further spread of matrix converters from several viewpoints. In addition, technical challenges to overcome the problems in applications and expected benefits realized by introduction of the matrix converters are clarified. First of all, systematic explanation of fundamental issues of the matrix converters including control methods is presented because lack of the common understanding is regarded as one of the barriers to their wider spread. Next, technical problems and their countermeasures based on the circuit configuration are summarized. Furthermore, practical issues such as circuit layout and implementation are discussed. In addition, to promote further spread, practical examples of applications and expected benefits in typical applications are presented. Finally, summary of the report and proposal to promote further spread of the matrix converters are shown.
