On behalf of the technical committee of the Institute of Electrical Engineers in Japan (IEEJ) in charge of the standardization of power system models, the authors introduced in this paper a summary of 4 kinds of bulk power systems and 3 kinds of sub-transmission network models developed by this technical committee. These models possess the distinctive characteristics of Japanese power systems and they have been developed with the objective of providing common system models for engineers and researchers in power system engineering.
The bulk power system models are used for load flow and stability studies. The Japanese power systems comprise both 50 Hz and 60 Hz systems; from the view point of system configuration, the 50 Hz systems comprise the Tokyo area loop systems and the 60 Hz systems are characterized by a longitudinal system from the west to the east. Because the characteristics of the systems are different, each bulk power system model was developed separately. As for the scale of the systems, two middle-scale 10-machine systems and two large-scale 30-machine systems were developed for the 50 Hz and the 60 Hz systems, respectively. There are in total four kinds of bulk power system models. In addition, two types of power flow conditions, daytime power flow and nighttime power flow conditions have been considered for each system model.
To successfully develop the bulk power system models, a questionnaire was conducted to reflect users’ wishes; whilst, the apparatus models and the parameters are based on CRIPI’s power system dynamics analysis program (CRIEPI Highly Aggregated Master-Tool of Power-System Stability “CHAMPS”), the Y-method which is widely used in Japan.

Sub-transmission Network Models
The sub-transmission network models were developed mainly for the verification of fault restoration and reliability assessment algorithms. To enable researchers to grasp the essence of the real systems, a part of the real systems was selected to form the basis for developing the following three kinds of systems
