Bulk Power System Models

The bulk power system models are standard system models developed to objectively evaluate new power system analysis tools, system control technologies, etc. Therefore, only apparatus model parameters that are important for power flow and stability studies have been used.

To successfully develop the bulk power system models, a survey was conducted to reflect users’ wishes. The apparatus models and the parameters are based on standard parameters of CRIEPI’s power system dynamics analysis program, the Y-method that is widely used in Japan, by utility companies, universities and manufactures. However, it has been confirmed that, if analysis tools other than the Y-method are used for a study, there will not be any problems.

A point that should not be misunderstood is that in the apparatus model described thereafter, the control systems of the generators are restricted to types 1 and 2, and the power flow condition is heavier than usual. Consequently, the present developed system models are unstable as compared to the real systems. For instance, in a real system, it will never happen that under the action of the main protection for a single fault, the system becomes unstable. However, the system models presented can become unstable depending on the location of the fault. In other words, these models have more severe conditions than the real systems.

In the following, first, each apparatus model and parameters used for the 10-machine system models will be described and then a summary of the 10-machine models will be presented.

The sub-transmission network models were developed mainly for the verification of fault restoration and reliability assessment algorithms. To enable researchers to grasp the essence of the real systems, a part of the real systems was selected to form the basis for developing the following three kinds of systems
